The Hula O Na Keiki, a children’s solo hula competition, is held on the grounds of Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Though the event has grown over the years, from a single day affair to an entire weekend of Hawaiian arts and music, the objective has remained the same – to educate our children in the ways of our ancestors so the culture can be carried forward.

Children from ages 5 years old to 17 years old will steal your heart and shutter your camera as you watch them compete in their categories for the coveted awards and titles. Besides each contestant going through a somewhat nerve-wracking interview in front of a panel of judges before the competition they are also required to memorize a chant in the native Hawaiian language. Later that evening they will perform one of their the kahiko (traditional) or auana (modern) style hula.

The next night is their last chance to prove to themselves, their hālau (hula school) and especially their kumu (teacher) that they have mastered the hula. Unless of course, they are also entered in the Palua (couple) Division when we get see them dance one more time in tandem! It's a weekend of "oohs" and "ahs" of colorful costumes, sassy attitudes, and of course, expertise of traditional hula!

Halau Na Pua ‘O UluhaimalamaのクムフラEmery Aceretです。

ハラウの歴史
Uluhaimālamaというのは「悟りをひらいた、または霊感を吹き込む」という意味です。
その言葉本来の意味は「暗黒の大地から草木が育ち出るように、光が国中に満ち溢れる。」
それはオアフ島のPauoaにあるQueen Liliʻuokalaniの秘密のフラワーガーデンの名前です。
この庭には1893年にハワイ王朝が倒された後イオラニ宮殿の片隅で幽閉された間毎日女王に献上された花が育てられていた。
その花が女王の部屋に励ましをもたらす時、その花を包んでいた新聞紙が彼女にハワイの国と人々の最新のニュース – 彼女を幽閉した人々が彼女に与えないようにしていたその当時の情報 – をもたらすのでした。
Hālau Nā Pua ʻO UluhaimālamaはEmeryのクムであるHālau Hula ‘O KahikilaulaniのRae K. Fonsecaにより1996年9月に設立され，光栄にもこの女王の庭から名付けられました。
Queen Liliʻuokalani Children’s CenterとクムのRaeの助けで私たちはヒロのLanakila Housing Complexで30人の子どもたちのために無料のフラプログラムを提供しました。
我々の主な目標はハワイの文化とフラの芸術を通して女王の遺産を引き継ぐことです。
この目標に1年間を費やして、私たちはハラウの扉を一般の人達にも開き、その結果WaimeaとコナのKailuaに教室を開いて通常クラスをオープンしました。
月に1度はこの3つのハラウを集めて合同でリハーサルを行います。
年に1度は旧飛行場近くのKona Papawai beachのQueen Liliʻuokalani Children’s Centerでキャンプを行います。
このキャンプでは生徒たちとその親御さんたちは違った種類のオリを学び、ハウスカートを作り、ラウハラを編みます。
2000年にはクムRaeとの共同でフラの研究を完成させたかったので一時的に公募を取りやめました。
ほとんどのオーラパ（ダンサー）は我々とHālau Hula ‘O Kahikilaulaniに入り、フラやその指導方法を学びました。
2003年にはHālau Nā Pua ʻO Uluhaimālamaがヒロの人たちを受け入れ、3歳からお年寄りまで、100名の生徒で再開しました。
それ以来、我々は次のような種々の祝賀会に広く参加するように頼まれました。

2007年の3月24日、Uncle George Naʻopeの見守る中、Hālau Hula O Kahikilaulaniのクムフラ Hula Rae K. Fonsecaが私と他5人に卒業式で名誉を与えてくれました。
私たちは現在正式にクムフラとして認められ、我々の成果を称えるKumu Hula Nā Kumu Palapalaの証明書とkīhei paʻa of white kapaをさずけられました。

It means a lot to me just having you there to lend a shoulder to cry on, share a laugh, and even to sing a song. It is a slow healing process not only for me but for everyone and my heart doesnʻt feel as heavy anymore. The weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Give me time and Iʻll be running 200% again.

I ola i ka noho hale.
That the house dweller may prosper.

The ceremony performed to bless our new home, our new child, was adapted from one described in David Malo's Hawaiian Antiquities. Ka 'oki 'ana o ka piko o ka hale, or the cutting of the navel string of the house was only performed after the house was complete and ready for habitation. Since we no longer thatch our homes and need to cut a door out, instead, we had a symbolic piko tied above the door. Within it were eight plants, each of them there for a reason.

'Ohe (Bamboo) knives were used in the past to cut the piko that bound mother and child. Its presence in the piko is a reminder of that.

Koa is one of the words for warrior. It is associated with strength, so its inclusion was to lend that aspect to our ceremony. They are also long lived trees, something we want to ensure our new hālau with.

Liko is the word for new growth. It symbolizes the child that our new hālau is, and encourages it to flourish.

Kupu means to sprout. By using Kupukupu in our piko, we help our hālau's growth and expansion.

Maile is one of the kinolau of the deities associated with hula, an integral part of our hālau's beginnings. Because of his involvement in hula, Kumu Em's knowledge and dedication to promoting and educating everyone about our culture was born. We used maile here in its binding form.

Pili was one of the most commonly known plants used for thatching a new hale. The word itself means close and suggests a binding relationship. Its dual symbolism here made it an important part of our piko.

Kukui is a word for light. It is also one of those plants associated with enlightenment. By including this plant in our piko, we ask for guidance and to be shown the way in all that we do.

The La'i used in our piko was that of the Kahuna variety, the one with the wavy edges used in blessings. It symbolizes blessing and good health.

All of these important plants were tied together by a Hau rope. The plant itself is a relative of the hibiscus and likes growing along the banks where there is brackish water. The picture you see here is of the leaves mainly because I couldn't find one of the winding branches. The wood is lightweight and was used in firebrands and to start fires. A rope can be made from the inner bark, but it is a tedious and time consuming task that can take weeks to complete. The resulting product is beautiful.

Hau is a derivative of the word hahau, which means to offer a prayer or blessing. It was an appropriate choice, therefore, to use to bind everything in our piko together. Oh yes, and the third hilo comes in here since the rope was of course, braided.

Our new child is born, ready to embrace the world and for it to embrace her as well.

The Papa Kaikamahine and their Parents as well as other family members got a 2-hour job done in only an hour and fifteen minutes.

The women of Hālau Nā Pua ʻO Uluhaimālama
makes its first appearance at the
2009 Moku O Keawe International Festival.
Above is a picture that appeared in the West Hawaii Today Newspaper the day after their performance. They are doing a hula kahiko mele entitled "Ia ʻOe E Ka Lā" written for the last reigning king of Hawaiʻi...King David Laʻamea Kalākaua. The style of dance is called "pahu pahu" that originated from the island of Kauaʻi.

This festival began on Thursday, November 5th and ended on Sunday, November 9th.

The Hula O Na Keiki, a children’s solo hula competition, is held right on the grounds of Ka'anapali Beach Hotel. Though the event has grown over the years, from a single day affair to an entire weekend of Hawaiian arts and music, the objective has remained the same – to educate our children in the ways of our ancestors so the culture can be carried forward. Hula students from Hawai`i and around the world are invited to compete in interview, dance, chant, and costume categories.

Hula Kahiko
Words and translation will be provided to each hālau once application is received and accepted. It is the responsibility of the Kumu Hula to haku the melody and the hula for the competition.

All participants must ʻoli in the competition. Applicant must also state the style of ʻoli to be performed and why it was chosen. Costume and adornments will be judged during the Interview and the Competition. Appropriate undergarments must be worn. Inappropriate undergarments will be deducted from Costume scores. There will be a Costume & Adornment prize.

Hula ʻAuana
All Hula ‘Auana songs shall be “hapa haole” with predominantly English lyrics. Songs originally written in Hawaiian may not be translated into English to accommodate this category. This yearʻs theme for ʻauana: Hapa Haole songs written between 1939 – 1959. Does not have to be by a Hawai’i-born composer, but use songs that bring dignity to the Hawaiian culture, not diminish it.

These are the dancer that will represent our Hālau for the 19th Celebration of Hula O Nā Keiki will be held November 13-15, 2009 at Kaanapali Beach Hotel.

The next night is their last chance to prove to themselves, their halau (hula school) and especially their kumu (teacher) that they have mastered the hula. It's a weekend of "oohs" and "ahs" of colorful costumes, sassy attitudes, and of course, expertise of traditional hula!

Aloha Kakou!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their hard work, commitment, dedication and most of all support for this year's Keiki Hula.

The girls were marvelous on and off the stage. Our girls were young women wherever they went and represented the halau and the Big Island in a very positive way. Wherever we went people were impressed with the girls as a group and individually.

Special thanks to Aunty Bonnie who treated us all to lunch at Forty Niner's and ice cream at Nestle's Toll House. And to Uncles Keoni, Carl and Dale who drove us through the chaotic Oahu traffic and always got us to where we were going on time! (And Uncle Dale who went searching thru Honolulu for additional green ti leaves). And to Aunties Lucy, Des, Nobi, and Kanoe for cooking, chaperoning and hanalima-ing (which sounds easier than it actually is), surviving on caffeine and a few hours of sleep a nite. The girls and adults enjoyed ALL the meals... and the all the girls had hearty appetites! .... And a special aloha to Bianca Soriano for doing the beautiful makeup on the girls, sacrificing herself to stay with the girls on the last nite, for making Kumu's ipuheke lei, trimming and adjusting kupe'es and lei ai's .... And Dason for his magical recovery from his high fever and flu symptoms to sing beautifully at the Blaisdell.

We know that as parents you are proud of your daughter, but we (chaperones/hanalima) want you to know that we also are very very proud of them. They worked together, played together, sang, ate, slept, danced and grew together as a family. Thank you for allowing us this special time together with your daughter. Ask them about their special memories ... hehe ... Emily and Meagan have special memories in the bathroom near the swimming pool... Jordan and Lahela have a special "link" with their red pa'u tops ... Teiala and Malia may be overwhelmed with the whole experience ... and Marissa - congratulations on receiving the scholarship award! ... Oh, and just to let you know, Jordan received a letter from the awards committee with a special presentation in the dressing room at the Blaisdell in the presence of her hula sisters as runner up for the award... and Janie's special memory may not be remembered by her, but by her hula sisters who carried her from bed to bed to make sure she wasn't "squished" when she was sleeping. Thank you parents for allowing your daughter to be a part of this marvelous event. Your hard work sewing, picking ti leaves, fundraising, practicing was all worth it! ... But most of all, thank you to Kumu Em - his loving energy, his aloha for the girls, his constant sharing of his mana'o ... WE LOVE YOU KUMU~~YOU ROCK!!

I apologize that we didn't have time to let the girls shop or swim this trip, but we did get to see some very special cultural sites and meet special people. Our visit to Io'lani Palace was moving. Our visit to Uluhaimalama Gardens was enlightening and our private visit to Mauna 'Ala, the Royal Mausoleum was awesome. Uncle Billy, the Kahu of Mauna Ala opened the gates for our private tour of the only known place in the United States that the flag of the Kingdom of Hawaii is permitted to fly unaccompanied by the American Flag. We all grew from this experience.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Established in 1996, Halau Na Pua 'o Uluhaimalama has participated in many cultural community events including the Merrie Monarch Festival noon shows and Kamehameha Day statue lei-draping ceremonies. "Hula is all about lineage. It is an age-old Hawaiian cultural practice enacted through chanting, singing, and dancing. Each hula movement has a meaning that helps tell a story about gods and goddesses, nature, or important events. Rather than simply a performance geared for tourists, the dance is something Hawaiians did for themselves for centuries at religious ceremonies honoring gods or rites of passage and at social occasions as a means of passing down history. Hula is our way of honoring our ancestors," explains kumu hula Emery Aceret.

Imagine the days when all of the cloth that was worn as garments, slept under as bedding, used for ceremonial occasions, wrapped around the `iwi (bones) of the ancestors, every imaginable use we now have for loomed fabric...all of this cloth came from the inner bark of trees, the most cultivated and useful of which is wauke, the paper mulberry tree. Wauke is also known as Broussonetia papyrifera, and is a member of the fig (Moraceae) family. It is the principle plant used in the making of kapa, or tapa cloth. Kapa means the beaten thing. One of the principle plants introduced by early voyaging Polynesians who settled here in Hawai`i, wauke is thought to have been carried in the canoes as root shoots, but can also be grown from cuttings and occasionally by seed.

We are starting to cultivate Wauke to make kapa and Aunty Lucy opened her backyard to the halau so we can learn more about our Hawaiian Culture.

It begins with preparing the shallow soiled ground for the Wauke to be planted about 1.5' apart.

These Wauke seedlings came from Amy Greenwell's Botanical Garden in Kona. Amy Greenwell specializes in NATIVE HAWAIIAN PLANTS.

"Look...I got my hands dirty" says Aunty Debbie.

After all the planting was done, Uncle Keoni waters the Wauke.

And here it is....Step One is completed!

The crown flowers represents Queen Lili'uokalani

The five (5) buds which it is on represents the 5 people the started the halau. They are: Kumu Em, Jerri Patao, Roy Kaneko, Tess Spencer, and Korallisa Wilson

The emblem on the bottom is one of many emblems worn by Queen Lili'uokalani as part of her adornments.

The five (5) arrows on both side also represents the 5-people that started the halau back in 1996 and it goes upwards because it is still growing from generation to genreation starting from our Queen.

BACK DESIGN This design is of Pauoa Valley behind of Uluhaimalama Garden. Never failing to bring her mist from the valley to the garde every time that we would visit and honor her by chanting and draping of leis.

This design shows the sun rays shing through the mist which is a sign that she is well pleased.

The emblem represents the crest of the last reigning queen.

The crown flowers represent Queen Lili'uokalani as well, in her garden, and the buds of the crown flower is the new genration, the keiki of our halau. or our race, our our nation.

And yes, we are proud to say the we are

An audience member from the First United Protestant Church Commented on the Benefit Concert put on by our Halau..................She said:

Hi -Saturday evening, we had a wonderful event here at FUPC: Halau Na Pua 'O Uluhaimalama, gave a benefit performance at FUPC to benefit our music fund. It was a memorable evening. This outstanding group, who some of you may have seen on tv, danced a varied program of hula kahiko (the old traditional type of hula) and hula 'auwana (modern versions of hula) in our sanctuary, for the full benefit of our music program (our piano soon will need replacement). I am sure performing in the limited space in our sancturay created a lot of artistic and technical problems for them - but the result was a spectacular intimacy and an immediate feeling of involvement of the audience with the dancers, - their dancing extended all the way into our aisles. The focus of the hula 'auwana was on modern songs of Hilo. The focus of the hula kahiko was on chants of old Hawaii, primarily evoking homage and loyalty to famous, accomplished, and revered members of Hawaiian royalty. A third segment of the program, blending both hula kahiko and hula 'auwana, paid special tribute to the tragic last monarch of Hawaii, Queen Li'ili'iokalani

Winners were announced in the 33rd annual Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula competition, held from Thursday to Saturday at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

The event, staged by the Kalihi-Palama Culture and Arts Society, attracts more than 400 children each year.

Miss Keiki Hula 2008:
Leah Santiago, Halau Kekuaokala'au'ala'iliahi.

First runner-up: Shalia Kamakaokalani, Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka.
Second: Keahonui Kam, Halau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniakea.

Jaiden "Puakea'okalani" Butler represented Halau Na Pua 'O Uluhaimalama as she honored Aunty Edith Kanaka'ole's mele untitled "PUA MELIE". Wearing a traditional holoku overlaid with a sheer sparkle chiffon and adorned with an rainbow colored plumeria lei...for which this song is about.

For the past 7 years, Kawena'ula Keiki Hula Scholarships of $250 have been awarded to deserving youngsters who dance in the Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition. To qualify, each child must submit an application form, along with an essay describing how hula influences his/her everyday life. It also recognizes these dancers' hard work and reward them for their accomplishments, as well as their academic achievements.

This year, Kelly was one of the four recipients to receive this award.

In addition, lei making workshop with Kukui Leaves...
Please pick your leaves at least by Sunday. DO NOT REFRIGERATE them. Let it wilt.
Bring also 6 green ti-leaves de-boned and burned (or softened) for braiding.
Plastic container to store lei in. You will be using these leis for the July 12th Hula
performance.
