To Honor A Queen....

Halau Na Pua 'O Uluhaimalama along with 12 other Hawai'i Island Na Halau celebrated HE HALI'A ALOHA NO LILI'UOKALANI at the Queen Lili'uokalani Gardens here in Hilo.

HISTORY:  

Lili'uokalani Gardens named after Hawaii's last Queen in 1917. The Japanese garden theme was inspired by a visit to Kyoto, Japan, and was a popular Victorian era design.  The park was developed on lands that were once fish ponds, swamp lands and waihonu (turtle ponds) fronting Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani's home.  After extensive renovations, the Lili'uokalani Gardens was re-opened on September 24, 2000 for the community, by the County of Hawai'i.  The ponds, stone lanterns, pagodas, footpaths, bridges and landscaping are all the enjoy, blending the Bi-Centennial Gardens, Urasenke Tea House and the Lili'uokalani Gardens into one large park. This park has been a community center for many decades, and was the original site for Hilo's Aloha Week events.
